The secret is out – all-new Range Rover breaks cover

When most new cars enter the final phases of their testing before general release, secrecy is paramount. Manufacturers clad their new models in all manner of body-shielding covers in order to protect their highly-prized secrets from rival car-makers’ gaze while carrying out all-important real-life tests intended to iron out any glitches before production goes into full swing.

But Land Rover is taking a different tack with the new Range Rover model, destined for showrooms in summer 2011. A fleet of several hundred pre-production models is now roaming the streets of ten of the world’s biggest cities, clad not in the usual neutral body armour, but in highly distinctive ‘camouflage’ disguises which actually tell people that the car underneath is the new Range Rover Evoque.

During their time spent wearing the one-off liveries, the vehicles are being evaluated in some of the toughest driving conditions in the world, as part of which feedback from covering millions of miles will be collected and evaluated, and then fed back to the Range Rover designers to enable them to make final tweaks to their new baby. The cars, built at Gaydon in Warwickshire, have been dispatched to London, New York, Paris, Berlin, Sydney, Sao Paulo, Shanghai, Madrid, Moscow and Milan – so it’s fair to assume that they will be seen by several million people while they are out and about on their routine run-ins.

In their testing phase, it is also expected that the new Range Rover Evoques will encounter all types of weather conditions, as well as being subjected to the rigours of daily driving around some of the world’s most traffic-clogged cities. A total of 20 countries were to be visited by the new Range Rovers, and they will be accompanied by engineers from the UK factory as they undergo their testing, which will be extended to 20 countries in all. In that time, more than 17,000 individual tests are expected to be carried out in conjunction with the 120 individual component suppliers which have helped kit out the cars.

The whole programme will have to be completed to a tight schedule in order for everything to be ready for the worldwide launch of the Range Rover Evoque, which is scheduled for the summer of 2011.

And the testing programme is being keenly watched by the staff at the Leeds Range Rover and Guiseley Range Rover dealerships. They are confident that the smallest and most fuel-efficient Range Rover ever produced will be delivered to them ready to handle the toughest Pennine road conditions – and that’s just what the test programme is designed to discover.

An extensive choice of new Range Rover and Land Rover models is available, all produced in the UK. Leeds and Guiseley Land Rover and Range Rover dealers also offer a carefully chosen selection for anyone looking to buy a used Land Rover or used Range Rover.

Like all of Vladimir Arnold’s books, this book is full of geometric insight. Arnold illustrates every principle with a figure. This book aims to cover the most basic parts of the subject and confines itself largely to the Cauchy and Neumann problems for the classical linear equations of mathematical physics, especially Laplace’s equation and the wave equation, although the heat equation and the Korteweg-de Vries equation are also discussed. Physical intuition is emphasized. A large number of problems are sprinkled throughout the book, and a full set of problems from examinations given in Moscow are included at the end. Some of these problems are quite challenging! What makes the book unique is Arnold’s particular talent at holding a topic up for examination from a new and fresh perspective. He likes to blow away the fog of generality that obscures so much mathematical writing and reveal the essentially simple intuitive ideas underlying the subject. No other mathematical writer does this quite so well as Arnold.

Stochastic Programming Problems with Probability and Quantile Functions

Stochastic Programming Problems with Probability and Quantile Functions

$265

Stochastic Programming Problems with Probability and Quantile Functions, Andrey I. Kibzun and Yuri S. Kan, Moscow Aviation Institute, Moscow, RussiaStochastic programming methods are used increasingly to help solve optimization problems in many areas of scientific research, business and industry. Until now, publications on the subject have been confined mainly to disparate sources, making this the first book to provide a unified and rigorous treatment. The probability function can be written formally as the expectation of the set indicator function. However, known optimization methods do not work because of the non-smoothness of the indicator function. Specific methods are required for solving these problems. After presenting examples of various models for several applied problems the book covers basic theoretical results and differing methods for calculating probability and quantile functions. The final chapter describes and compares numerical algorithms for the solution of stochastic programming problems with probabilistic objectives. As well as providing a clear introduction to the subject, the authors comprehensively cover all major results in the area. Numerous examples, models and algorithms are given, taken mostly from real problems in business and engineering. The book will be of interest to advanced students and researchers in operations research, statistics, engineering and economics.

Ace historian Christopher Andrew delivers what may well be the intelligence book of the century. Including smuggled files from the foreign intelligence archives of the KGB, this treasure trove proves that there was indeed an enemy–and that he was very much in our midst. 40 halftones. From the Publisher The Sword and the Shield gives us by far the most complete picture we have ever had of the KGB and its operations in the United States and Europe. It is based on an unprecedented, top-secret archive described by the FBI as the most complete and extensive intelligence ever achieved from any source . Vasili Mitrokhin worked for almost thirty years in the foreign intelligence archives of the KGB. In 1972 he was made responsible for moving these archives, including all the files on the KGB’s deep-cover operatives, to a new a headquarters outside Moscow. Unknown to his superiors, however, Mitrokhin spent over a decade making transcripts of these highly classified files, which he daily smuggled out of the archives and kept beneath his dacha floor. As a result, no one who spied for the Soviet Union at any point between the Bolshevik Revolution and the 1980s can now be sure that his or her secrets are safe. Christopher Andrew has had exclusive access to both Mitrokhin and his archive. Supplementing this treasure trove of KGB secrets with extensive research in other archives, he has written an extraordinary book which forces us to acknowledge that there was indeed an enemy — and that he was very much in our midst.
