Fantastic Variations on an Old Rhyme (1917) is all that survives of what Brian intended to be a Fantastic Symphony. Essentially, it’s a theme-and- variations on the childhood chant “Three Blind Mice”. The symphonies on this release are much darker in character. They have all the Brian trademarks of interrupted rhythms and outlandish (and unexpected) fanfare-like pronouncements. What gives them uni…

A Candle Burned: Stories of Faith and Hope from Russia and Ukraine

A Candle Burned: Stories of Faith and Hope from Russia and Ukraine

$40.95

A Candle Burned In 1929, when Yelena was 13 years old, she and her mother and father were exiled to Siberia. Her father was dying and decided that he should try to escape the Soviet labor camp. He made it out alive, by the grace of God, and then Yelena and her mother also fled – and survived. But only after walking across Siberia for one year to reach a train station. When asked how they survived the rugged Siberian winter when they were clothed only in rags, with lice covering them from head to toe, Yelena says ringingly clear: GOD HELP US! Yelena’s story is one that still brings a tear to her eye – 78 years later. For A Candle Burned, Jerry Guibor interviewed friends of his who were born into Soviet oppression and survived those terrible times to find there is a living God who loves them. Others stubbornly cling to their atheistic upbringing. Nevertheless, their stories are just as compelling.

A History of Russia, Central Asia and Mongolia

A History of Russia, Central Asia and Mongolia

$106.23

This is a history of Russia, Central Asia and Mongolia from the time of the first inhabitants of the region up to the break up of the Mongol Empire in 1260 AD. Inner Eurasia, as the author defines it, comprises most of the former Soviet Union and Russia’s huge territories in Siberia; Russia’s former empire in Central Asia; China’s central Asian empire; and Mongolia, both the parts within China and those within the Mongolian People’s Republic. The author presents Inner Eurasia as a coherent region with an underlying unity in geography and history despite its cultural and ecological variety. This volume, the first of two surveying this region, charts developments from the Old Stone Age, through changes under such peoples as the Scythians, the Huns and the Turks, to the emergence of an identifiable Rus – the society from which modern Russia and Ukraine have evolved. The book sets political events in the broadest context of social and economic change, linking evolution to the vast geography of the territories it describes. Together with volume II covering the period up to the present, the work represents the most thorough, up-to-date study of this fascinating and much misunderstood region of the world.

 Common Legacies - Divergent Outcomes

Common Legacies – Divergent Outcomes

The East European transformation posited a challenge to established theories of institutional systems and business and economic studies. How could a theoretical framework simultaneously account for the radical changes in the institutional system and macroeconomic processes as well as for the rather different pace of changes at micro and mezzo levels? How could the changed attributes of firms and the endurance of old practices within these firms be reconciled in a coherent theoretical framework? It is argued here that without the analysis of enterprise transformation, interpretations of the East European transition inevitably lead to contradictory conclusions. Thus the contribution of this book is the interpretation of the enterprise transformation in the context of the institutional and economic transformation, through the comparative study of enterprise transformation in two former Soviet Republics, now independent states, Estonia and Ukraine.

 Earth

Earth

$24.99

One of the four giants of early Soviet revolutionary cinema (along with Eisenstein, Pudovkin and Vertov), Alexander Dovzhenko staggered the film world with his silent masterpiece Earth. The deep feeling and poetic imagery of this film transcend locale and era, move strong men to tears and have frequently won it a place on critics’ lists of the greatest films of all time, although strikingly simple in plot. On the eve of collectivization in the Ukraine, an old farmer dies peacefully in bed. His grandson Vasil has a new vision–the village council will buy a tractor to be shared among the farmers. Struggling against superstition, rich landowners and nature itself, Vasil is ultimately the victim of a tragic murder, but the dawn brings forth a new life and the promise of prosperity to the poor village. The story itself is secondary to the visually stunning and incredibly moving images that Dovzhenko creates. His love for the Ukrainian people and land intoxicated the viewer with the sensual splendors that fill the screen. This presentation of Earth is complete and uncensored, mastered from a high-quality 35mm master print imported from the Soviet Union, with an added orchestral soundtrack. The special bonus presentation of Bezhin Meadow would have been Sergei Eisenstein’s most beautiful and lyrical film–had it been permitted to see the light of day. In one of cinema’s great tragedies, it was banned by Stalinist officials in 1937 and copies of the film were subsequently destroyed by German bombing in World War II. Only individual still images and film frames survived. These, along with Eisenstein’s original script and production records, guided Soviet researchers who painstakingly produced this 30-minute reconstruction of Eisenstein’s original conception, doing full justice to the master’s renowned visual style.

Field Marshal Von Manstein, A Portrait

Field Marshal Von Manstein, A Portrait

$54.26

Most military historians are in agreement that Feldmarschall Erich von Manstein was the most outstanding German high commander of the Second World War. Many view him as the foremost exponent of large-scale mobile operations in any of the Second World War armies. Surprisingly, no biography of him has yet been written. To this day, his family refuses to release the papers of his estate to the German military archives at Freiburg. Furthermore the contradictions in the personality of von Manstein make it difficult to generate a synthesis. On one side there is an extraordinary military talent, on the other many political and moral aspects. His military achievements stand in sharp contrast to his inhumane policy of occupation in Russia, his active participation in the slaughter of Jews in Southern Ukraine and the Crimea and his ambivalent attitude to the military resistance movement. These contradictions have led the author to describe Manstein as ‘the Janushead’ – the term chosen for the title of the book. He has not written a traditional biography but a portrait. A complete account of all phases of Manstein’s career is given in one chapter, seven more chapters deal extensively with milestones in Manstein’s career: his successful plan for the battle of France which led to the defeat of the French Army in less than one month, his dereliction of duty during the battle for Stalingrad, his hubris which led to the disaster of the battle for Kursk, his refusal to take part in the military resistance movement, his compliance with the Commissar order and his involvement in the Holocaust. The author has widened the subject well beyond the personality of its central figure. It showshow the Nazi system, step by step, succeeded in perverting the centuries-old traditions of the Prussian and German officer corps. Thus, an additional number of German generals are treated in detail to illustrate how moral decrepitude progressively penetrated the highest levels of the arm

In the wake of the break-up of the old Hapsburg, Ottoman and Romanov empires, minority populations throughout those lands were persecuted, expelled and eliminated. Here My Home Once Stood

Here My Home Once Stood

As a fourteen-year-old Jewish boy who had rarely ventured outside his small, remote village, Moyshe Rekhtman may seem an unlikely escape artist. But his iron will and quick wit allowed him to survive when all seemed lost. Staging escapes from death camps and avoiding Nazi pursuit through the frozen Ukrainian countryside-all while facing the loss of his family, famine, constant threat of capture, torture, and execution – would be a monumental task for the strongest of men. Despite his mild manners, emaciated body, and poor vision, he evaded the death squads in Nazi-occupied Ukraine for four years. Moyshe”s Holocaust memoir is a remarkable example of human fortitude during a time when many welcomed an end to their suffering.

Holy Smoke: From Edinburgh to the Ukraine by Yacht

Holy Smoke: From Edinburgh to the Ukraine by Yacht

$14.95

After his career in research, the author and his wife sailed from Edinburgh to the Mediterranean. While over-wintering at Rhodes they decided to go to the Ukraine in 1991, visiting Varna in Bulgaria, Odessa and Yalta. This was the first British boat to visit Yalta since 1919 where they found themselves in the midst of the Gorbachev coup. Cruising was fascinating with an unexpectedly sociable life. Visiting the old Communist bloc was eye-opening. Watching the people grappling with the evident collapse of their leaders and political system was mind-blowing for all concerned.Eric White has written many scientific papers. This is his first product in a different genre. It has been no less demanding and hugely enjoyable. He continues to sail, including circumnavigating, in his imagination. His daughter Susan in Australia continues sailing in the next generation.

How Ukraine Became a Market Economy and Democracy

How Ukraine Became a Market Economy and Democracy

$26.95

One of Europe”s old nations steeped in history, today Ukraine is an undisputed independent state. Ukraine”s postcommunist transition has been one of the most protracted and socially costly, but it has taken the country to a desirable destination: It is a democracy and has transformed into a market economy with predominant private ownership. In this clear, accessible account of Ukraine”s political and economic metamorphosis, noted expert on the postcommunist transformation Anders Aslund provides a chronological guide to the evolution of a country known for its diverse regions. Aslund identifies the protagonists and leaders who have formed the country”s regimes and analyzes how constant governmental transitions have affected the achievement of a parliamentary-based system. The author presents an easy-to-read analysis that documents the country”s transformation and assesses the ultimate repercussions of this gradual political rebirth on Ukraine”s governmental and societal architecture.

Mabel Mercer & Stan Getz concert at Philharmonic Hall on 03 Jul 73

Mabel Mercer & Stan Getz concert at Philharmonic Hall on 03 Jul 73

$6.98

As part of “A Jazz Salute to the American Song” at Philharmonic Hall, tenor sax great Stan Getz joined with the 74-year-old British cabaret singer Mabel Mercer for an all-Rodgers & Hart program. Accompanied by Mercer’s longtime pianist Jimmy Lyon, bassist Larry Ridely and drummer Jimmy Cacuso, they brought a touch of class to the stage on stirring interpretations of such romantic nuggets as “My Romance,” “It Never Entered My Mind,” “We’ll Never Meet Again” and “I Wish I Were In Love Again.” And while Mercer’s theatrical delivery and rolling of her r’s might seem antiquated by post-bebop standards, Getz’s relaxed, velvety tones provide the perfect compliment on this nostalgic evening at Philharmonic Hall. A perennial favorite at the Newport Jazz Festival since the early ’60s, Getz was born Stanley Gayetsky on February 2, 1927, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His parents were Ukrainian Jews who emigrated from the Kiev, Ukraine area in 1903. The family later moved to New York City for better employment opportunities. Getz grew up in the Bronx and began playing saxophone at age 13, idolizing Count Basie’s star tenor man, Lester Young. In 1943, at the age of 16, he was accepted into Jack Teagarden’s big band. Because of his youth he became Teagarden’s legal ward. There followed stints in the big bands of Stan Kenton (1944-1945), Jimmy Dorsey (1945) and Benny Goodman (1945-1946) before he finally joined Woody Herman’s Second Herd in 1947. Getz became one of the fabled Four Brothers in Herman’s band (along with fellow saxophonists Zoot Sims, Herbie Steward and Serge Chaloff) and remained with the group for two years. After leaving Herman’s band, Getz was a featured played on Norman Granz’s Jazz at the Philharmonic revue before branching out in 1950 to lead his own quartet, which featured pianist Al Haig, bassist Tommy Potter and drummer Roy Haynes. Another edition of the Getz quartet, formed later that year, featured a young pianist named Horace Silver, who would become a

 Main Battle Tank T-80

Main Battle Tank T-80

$22.59

Developed from the late 1970s, the T-80 represents the final phase of Soviet tank development in the era before the break-up of the Soviet Union and the emergence of the Russian Federation and the other new states created as the Soviet Union gradually imploded. Amongst the most technologically advanced of all amour to have emerged from the old Soviet Union, the T-80 and its later variants, such as the T-90 ‘Black Eagle’, remain central to the Russian army’s armored units as well as the armies of several of the ex-Soviet states, such as the Ukraine. In addition to service with the forces of the erstwhile Soviet union, the T-80 has also found a significant place in the global market place with orders from, amongst others, Pakistan and Korea. In the third of the new ‘Russian Armour’ series, Mikhail Baryatinskiy provides the reader with a comprehensive account of the development and operational record of the T-80 main battle tank. Utilising photographs, line drawings and specially prepared artworks, he provides a detailed portrait of these highly successful tanks. The book includes six chapters. Chapter 1 describes the T-80′s development history; chapter 2 deals with the production of the baseline diesel-engine T-80 and its subsequent modernization to T-80BV standard, a detailed structural description of the T-80B following in Chapter 3. The next chapter describes the production of the turbine-powered T-80U and its mid-life upgrade, the T-80UD. Chapter 5 gives an account of the T-80′s service, including combat use by the Russian Army. Finally, Chapter 6 describes the T-80U’s further development into the most advanced Russian tank of today, the T-90 ‘Black Eagle’. Aimed at themodeler, military historian and war-gamer, the new ‘Russian Armour’ series is designed to provide, probably for the first time in the English language, authoritative information on the classic Soviet tank designs of the 20th century. The series will be required reading for all those inte
