Judaic Tradition & Culture   by Matan Schatzman

Judaism is the name of the religion or belief of Jews. Judaic mythology has grown over the period from many different sources. It all started from the ancient Hebrew bible. Also the bible itself covers a period between polytheism and monotheism and thus has many opportunities that give birth to myths. These were later explored in texts like the Talmud. There is a Judaic belief that God gave Ten Commandments or laws to Moses on Mt.Sinai. These Ten Commandments are to be followed by the follower of Judaism. Judaism is believed to be 3000 years old. The Judaic traditions and beliefs have influenced the later religions like Abrahamic, Islam, and Christianity etc. Also the western society and ethics have been influenced directly or indirectly.

The major Judaic countries are Israel, USA and Canada. About 42% of the Jewish community resides in Israel and 42% reside in USA and Canada. The judaic followers have scattered not only with respect to locations but also with respect to the extent of observance. There are some who follow the commandments as law – unalterable and unquestionable- and strictly follow them too. These are the Orthodox Judaism followers. The Conservative and Reform Judaism are much more liberal. The conservatives are more traditional while for the reformists, the Commandments are general guidelines. The rabbis, sacred texts and scholars are the Judaic courts of law.

The early Jews too were literate. They have documented their beliefs, traditions, tales and legends. All these make a rich collection of myths, stories and folklore. Their writings are a mixture of imagination and practical experience. These two parts of the faith cannot be separated into different entities. They are one in teaching, spirit, law and folklore. They together give birth to wonderful tales and myths forming the basic path of a great faith.

Another way adopted by the Jews to express their love, respect, belief and traditions is art. Many artifacts are present dating as early as 3000 years ago. These artifacts and text are called Judaica. These Judaic artifacts and text are considered very important by the Jews.

According to Judaic Tradition Jewish history indicates the rupture of the Israelites with Moses and belief in God immediately after the Exodus from Egypt. The Israelites were condemned to wander about in the desert for forty years (presumably until the generation of sinners faded away) before they conquered the Promised Land.

They were organized first in a federation then in a kingdom under King David. The zenith of the Kingdom was attained under King Solomon, son of David (about 1000 B.C.) who built the first Temple of Jerusalem. After the death of Solomon, about 933 B.C. the Kingdom was split into two Kingdoms established on the ruins of the old Kingdom, one in the north (Israel) and the second in the south (Judah). They abandoned little by little the teachings of the Torah, practiced idolatry and plunged into corruption. They were delivered incessantly to wars until their final destruction (definitive for the Kingdom of Israel, and temporary for the Kingdom of Judah). The Assyrians destroyed the kingdom of Israel in 721 B.C., by dispersing the Ten Israelite Tribes and deporting the Israelites on exile. The Babylonians destroyed the Kingdom of Judah in 586 B.C. and exiled the Jews for seventy years in Babylon.
