Envelope stuffing – a review by Geoff Oswald
Working from home stuffing envelopes was popular in the 1950s before the invention of cheap and easy to buy computers and printers. In past years it may have been a good way to work from home to earn extra money. However, it has now become a possible scam which takes advantage of home workers trying to earn an honest wage. My advice would be to approach stuffing envelopes as a way of earning extra money with great caution or even better – stay well clear, as you will see.
On the face of it, it would seem an ideal type of work for the retired, mothers with young children, the disabled, or in fact anyone looking for a little extra cash. In reality, the business pack may come at a hefty price, with a registration fee on top. Some will require you to advertise your own home stuffing envelope business or even another home opportunity before you can earn any money at all, and thus perpetuate the difficulty.
Adverts for envelope stuffing opportunities appear everywhere – from your postbox to your newspaper to your email in-box. Promoters usually advertise that, for a small fee, they will tell you how to earn big money from stuffing envelopes at home. Indeed they may even claim that they will pay you a certain amount of money for each envelope stuffed, resulting in large sums of money for you each week. The rates of pay need to be carefully examined as they are often rather low.
Of course one can simply be employed as an envelope stuffer, and get paid by the number completed. Again, it is wise to be very careful, as the rates are again notoriously low and there are often penalties for any errors or incorrect addresses. Having said that, genuine jobs in this line are decreasing rapidly due to new technology which can do it automatically. The same can be said for envelope addressing, as machines can now even simulate hand written addresses. In fact, stuffing envelopes by hand is now a thing of the past. Mailing houses have machinery that folds, inserts, seals and franks – all in one process at a rate of at least 5,000 per hour. High speed label applicators can put labels onto envelopes at a rate of 12,000 per hour. For those items which are not machine compatible, mailing houses have full time staff, sometimes on 24 hour shifts to complete the work by hand.
There is however a positive aspect to this subject for the home business market. Direct mail, either by letter or post card is one of the most effective methods, particularly here in the UK, to either advertise or drive traffic to your website, but it must be done in a personalised way. By that I mean that the address must be hand written, as the recipient is far more likely to open it, and, in the case of a letter, it should have a hand written and signed ‘post it’ message on the document to increase the chances of the recipient reading it and believing its authenticity.

Bastardos $2.95 Selfishness. It can be either a friend or foe in the songwriting process and the bigger musical world. For Blues Traveler, selfishness has been a long time coming. It’s what drives the band’s eighth studio album, Bastardos!: a need for the band members to make themselves–and only themselves–happy while making music. But Bastardos! isn’t merely about a bunch of selfish, um, er, bastards making themselves happy or being overly indulgent. Musically, it’s about a band growing into itself not for the first, but the second time–remarkably–while simultaneously making sure to have fun and push the envelope creatively. But make no mistake, while Bastardos! may not have been written and recorded with the radio in mind, that endless hooky side of Blues Traveler–be it in Kinchla’s riffing or frontman John Popper’s harmonica blasts–is still very much intact. They remain one of the few kingpins of the jam scene who can actually back up their grooves with carefully crafted songs and stories that are both witty and catchy.Essential to the band’s approach was producer, solo artist and ex-Wilco multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett, who quickly assumed a sixth member role, shining a light on the best of the band’s ideas and cherrypicking the unpolished gems in the Bastardos! demos and turning them into jewels, while also shining a light on each of the band members’ individual strengths. He was the voice of authority, but he was very much an equal, says Wilson. Instead of it being like a ‘producer on high’ sort of thing, ya know: ‘No, we’re not doing that, no we’re not doing that, no we’re not doing that.’ It was more like him sitting there listening to us come up with ideas, and going, ‘Oh, I like that. I like that. I like that. As a result, the current version of Blues Traveler found itself truly congealing for the first time in the studio. Following the death of founding bassist Bobby Sheehan in 1999, Blues Traveler–which until that point had always been a quarte |

Carnal Nation: Brave New Sex Fictions $10.67 Sex, once the great unspoken, is now regularly commodified and prepackaged for wide consumer consumption, on TV, in films, on billboards. In this context in which nothing is shocking — no boundary too sacred to cross — what does sex mean, particularly to those born under these conditions? Carnal Nation collects stories about sex by an exciting new generation of writers who boldly push the narrative envelope. These are not your typical bump-and-grind tales, but stories written in a startling new language, bringing fresh meaning to the term polymorphously perverse: from a high-school deflowering on the hood of a car by a dildo-wielding girl who calls herself a guy, to a talented male stripper who demonstrates his ability to open a Coke bottle with no hands, to suburban porn watching as a precursor to racial harmony. |

Don’t Know Much about the Civil War $1.02 What was the leading cause of death among Civil War soldiers? Why did Robert E. Lee resign from the U.S. Army? Which group was exempt from the Confederate draft? Whom did the Emancipation Proclamation emancipate? Was the Gettysburg Address truly written on the back of an envelope? Did General Sherman really say, War is Hell? If you can’t answer most of these questions, you’re not alone. Millions of Americans, bored by dull textbooks, are in the dark about the most significant event in American history. Too many others thought they learned it all from Gone With the Wind. Bestselling author Kenneth C. Davis sheds light on these and other questions about America’s greatest conflict in this fascinating program, providing listeners with everything they need to know about the Civil War. With his deft wit and unconventional style, Davis sorts out the players, the politics, and the key events. Drawing on moving eyewitness accounts of the people who lived through the war, he brings listeners into the world of the ordinary men and women who made history — the side of the story that textbooks never tell. Don’t Know Much About RM the Civil War explodes the myths and misconceptions about the war, its causes, and the men who fought on both sides. A brilliant crash course, it vividly brings to life Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Generals Lee and Grant, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Beecher Stowe. It looks behind the battles and the tactics to the astounding human misery the war brought upon a divided nation, and includes a wealth of hidden history, the lesser-known facts sure to fascinate even the most learned Civil War buff. |

Heroes and Hierophants $108.27 Heroes And Hierophants is the culmination of a year of innovative writing from three of today”s hottest underground authors. The plan was simple: each week one of them would propose a topic, and they would each have a week to write about it. Then the next week another would give a topic, and so forth for the whole of the year. From this simple high concept beginning, Marcus D”Ambrose, Douglas Palermo and Noel Rogers took the project into directions entirely unprecedented. From serious god knowledge to rape jokes, the fearless trio push the envelope, lift the skirt of reality and explore the boundaries of the written word. What is already described as a bold and visionary experiment in 21st century literature (The Milville Times) and perhaps the first look at a new integral method for the evolution of the species into cosmic awareness (The Dobbs Ferry Clarion) is finally ready for download into your consciousness. Are you ready for it? |

Letters from Prague, 1939-1941 $15.95 Their discovery of a box of letters to America sent from relatives in Prague led two sisters to compile this extraordinary collection. Raya Schapiro and Helga Weinberg found the letters among their mother’s effects after her death in 1990. They were written by their grandmother and uncle, trapped in Prague after the Nazi occupation, to the girls’ parents who had escaped to the United States in May, 1939, leaving the two girls behind. The 77 letters reprinted here span a period of two years, during which the Nazis drew an ever-tightening noose of destruction around the Jews of Prague: each letter is followed by notes of explanation and amplification, as well as notes on laws and official restrictions and the progress of the war. The early letters deal with the difficulties of getting the two small girls out to join parents in America. After that is accomplished, the grandmother and uncle concentrate on their own prospects for immigration, and they struggle to maintain a normal life while hope slips steadily away. Each letter has a censor’s stamp on it; each envelope bears the still-frightening emblem of the Third Reich. The letters dramatically convey the tension, growing daily, of existence under the Nazis, and their tone becomes increasingly desperate as every avenue of escape reaches a dead end. Reading Letters from Prague is a moving experience, because it makes tangible a time in history so cruel as to be almost surreal. A rich legacy of bygone European Jewish life is maintained in this book, and Schapiro and Weinberg, now grandparents themselves, can point to an invaluable record of human suffering and show the world that their voices, and those of their ancestors, cannot besilenced. Their singular story will live on for generations to come. |

Obama Diaries $25 The Diary of President Barack Obama The White House May 19, 2010 I was going to write about tonight’s state dinner for Mexico and the amnesty plan, but we’ve got a national crisis here! I think somebody’s been snooping in this diary! The pages are all wrinkled! And the most personal entries are dog-eared! WHAT THE HELL’S GOING ON HERE? (WASHINGTON, D.C.) On May 20, 2010, Laura Ingraham received a package from an anonymous source that will change the history of the United States and the legacy of President Barack Obama. While retrieving her automobile from the underground garage at the Watergate complex (where she had just enjoyed her weekly pedicure), Ingraham discovered a manila envelope on the hood of her car. When she picked it up, a deep baritone voice called out from a nearby stairwell: Just read it. You’ll know what to do. The shadowy figure then disappeared into the darkness without another word. The envelope contained copies of what appeared to be diary entries written by President Barack Obama, his family, and high-ranking administration officials. Because the diaries are so revealing, Ingraham felt compelled to release them to the American public and the citizens of the world. Major media outlets love to describe the president as no drama Obama, but The Obama Diaries tells a different tale. Through these diary entries, readers will see past the carefully constructed Obama fa ade to the administration’s true plans to remake America. In The Obama Diaries, Ingraham hilariously skewers the president and his minions. She takes aim at: the cynical razzle-dazzle marketing of Obama’s radical agenda the use of the Obama brand and family to obscure Obama’s true aims Michelle Obama’s gardening and anti-obesity initiative; and much more. Informative and hugely entertaining, The Obama Diaries will inspire both laughter and critical thinking about the future of th |

On the Record $38.71 Back in the ’60s, at age 38, the author tested the water by writing a bold and provocative memoir (currently in print as The Reluctant Exhibitionist), an exploration of pushing the envelope of convention in his search for personal authenticity. Now, 33 year later, at age 69, he’s written another book, not a challenge this time, but a meditation on the journey from then to now, a study of what has changed for him and what has endured. It is his first new book in twenty-nine years ( Dying: A Guide to Helping & Coping, published in 2000, was a update and revision of a book he originally wrote in 1975). Part Memoir and part assessment of the state of the world today (including his thoughts about music, medicine, education, politics, dishonesty, the law, book publishing, religion, love serendipity, family, and serenity), On The Record is unique in that Shepard marries his music to his prose with an accompanying CD: each of the seven chapters is matched by a song he wrote and recorded between February 2003 and August 2004 that highlights his reflections. One acquaintance, who read the Manuscript, told Martin that she thought of it as a spiritual book, without the traditional trappings. In response, Shepard quipped that he saw it as the literary equivalent of an Off-off Broadway musical in seven acts. No matter how one interprets it. On The Record travels down a path that invites all of us to think for ourselves, to write what we please, live how we please, and love how we please. |

Pushing the Envelope: The American Aircraft Industry $131.77 Pushing the Envelope, a survey history of the American aircraft (now aerospace) manufacturing industry, is the most comprehensive history on the subject ever completed. Though it covers the development of the industry from the beginnings of flight to the present, it provides far more than a simple chronology by analyzing key economic, military, technical, and international influences on the industry and showing how the industry has been instrumental in American military and technological leadership from its modest beginnings.Using original sources whenever available, Pushing the Envelope focuses on the business of aircraft. It is neither an aeronautical nor a production history of the industry, although both aspects are addressed. Instead, Donald M. Pattillo features the development and production of aircraft in different periods in the context of aeronautical progress. Pushing the Envelope also establishes that the central fact of the industry’s existence, its dependence on military contracts, has been simultaneously its greatest strength and greatest vulnerability. Even during periods of military expansion, Pattillo illustrates, it has always been an unstable and insecure enterprise.Carefully researched, Pushing the Envelope also assesses the environmental impacts on the industry, including those pressures that have often led it into ethical dispute. Unlike any other technological industry, the unique qualities of the aircraft industry are truly paradoxical–although it provides vital technical and production capability to the nation, demand for its capabilities may be influenced by external developments that it cannot foresee or influence. Pushing the Envelope transcends narrow disciplines, commingling aeronautical science and technology, business management, international business, the history of science and technology, national security studies, and international relations. Written in nontechnical language, it can easily be understood by a d |

Read My Lips $16.95 Riki Anne Wilchins has written the book that may take the discussion of gender over the top. Read My Lips: Sexual Subversion and the tend of Gender, a frontal assault on both the status quo in academic studies and the full spectrum of single-issue identity politics, will change the way you think about bodies, sex, and gender. Yours and everyone else’s.Combining the theoretical breakthroughs of Judith Butler’s Gender Trouble and the performance revelations of Kate Bornstein’s Gender Outlaw, Wilchins — cofounder of the Transsexual Menace — moves the dialogue to a new level. In a voice that is by turns outraged, outrageous, sad, and hilarious, the author weaves theory and personal experience into a compelling story of self-discovery. She redefines what it means to be gendered , both by the way she lives and the accessible theoretical narrative she constructs.Read My Lips, with its unique mix of theory and application, anecdote and affront, will appeal to feminists, queer academics, activists, transpeople, the-queer-on-the-street , and the increasing audience of mainstream readers hungry for writing that pushes the absolute edge of the gender envelope.OUT Magazine says that the author has surfaced as the Superhero of this burgeoning (transgender) movement . Wilchins, herself, signs off on her email as follows: Just your average straight white guy with a cunt who really digs lezzie chicks like me . Rarely have smarts and chutzpah produced such good effect. |
